In 1985, Gains portrayed Dixon in Back to the Future, a science-fiction adventure. Earlier in the decade, Gains took on the role of Twig in The Wrath of Becky, a 2023 release. In 1990, Gains appeared as Eugene McVey in Memphis Belle, a wartime drama. Gains also took part in The Silent Natural, a 2019 drama, playing Tug Wilson.
