Marguerite Lumière

Marguerite Lumière was born on September 13, 1874, in Lyon, France. Known primarily as Mrs. Auguste Lumière, she appeared in one of the earliest known films in cinema history. In 1896, she was credited as Mrs. Auguste Lumière in The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, a short silent film directed by her husband, Auguste Lumière.

Her role in the film was as a self-portrayal, appearing briefly among the arriving passengers at the train station. The film is recognized as a landmark in the development of motion pictures, though Marguerite Lumière’s contribution remains a minor but documented part of its history. She died on June 25, 1965, in Lyon, France, marking the end of a life that intersected with the very origins of cinema.
