Biography
Noburô Ôfuji was born on June 1, 1900 in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. Working within the film industry, Ôfuji is recognized for contributions to animation, developing an approach that relied on traditional Japanese materials. Under the guidance of Junichi Kouchi, Ôfuji acquired foundational skills in the medium before establishing a distinct style centered on cutout animation techniques.
Ôfuji’s work involved experimental methods, incorporating chiyogami—traditional Japanese decorative paper—as a primary material for creating animated sequences. Beyond this, the filmmaker explored multiple techniques, including the use of cel animation, silhouettes, and colored cellophane to achieve varied visual effects.
