He began his acting journey in the late 1940s, making his debut in the 1948 film "Macbeth" as Malcolm. Throughout his career, McDowall appeared in various films, including "A Bug's Life" in 1998 where he lent his voice to the character of Mr. Soil. He also portrayed significant roles in films like "Shakma" (1990) as Sorenson and "Back to the Planet of the Apes" (1980) as Galen. McDowall's most notable works, however, were his portrayals of Cornelius and Caesar in the original "Planet of the Apes" film series.
