Takashi Kawamata

Takashi Kawamata was born on July 3, 1926, in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. In the early 1950s, Kawamata began working in the film industry, contributing to the visual foundation of Japanese cinema during a period of artistic reinvention. One of the earliest documented roles is as an Assistant Camera on the 1953 film Tokyo Story, a collaboration that would later be recognized as a landmark in world cinema.

By 1960, Kawamata had advanced to the position of Director of Photography for Cruel Story of Youth.
