In 1985, Kawaguchi served as key animation on Angel's Egg. The following year, in 1988, Kawaguchi held key animation roles on My Neighbor Totoro and Akira. In 1992, Kawaguchi worked as animation director on Porco Rosso. Kawaguchi later provided key animation for Princess Mononoke in 1997 and for Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade in 1999. In 2017, Kawaguchi returned to key animation on Mary and The Witch's Flower.
